Tax benefit with equity risk

Tax-Saving Funds: Understand ELSS Before You Invest

Learn how ELSS works, what the lock-in means, and why tax saving should not replace investment analysis.

Primary purpose

Eligible tax deduction combined with equity investing

Return source

Equity-market returns

Typical risk

High to very high

Common horizon

At least the statutory lock-in; often longer

The essential idea

What is it?

Equity Linked Savings Schemes are diversified equity funds with a statutory lock-in and potential tax benefit subject to the investor’s tax regime and prevailing law. The tax feature does not reduce equity-market risk.

Each SIP instalment has its own lock-in period. Compare ELSS using the same portfolio, risk, consistency, and cost discipline applied to other equity funds—not merely the previous year’s return.

The main types

Actively managed ELSS

A manager selects the portfolio within the equity and tax-saving mandate.

Passive ELSS

An eligible index-oriented structure.

Growth and IDCW options

Options affect how value is retained or distributed; they do not create extra returns.

Risk at a glance

What can go wrong?

Typical range: High to very high. Actual risk depends on the product’s portfolio, implementation, and market conditions.

1

Equity-market risk

NAV can fall materially during the lock-in.

2

Liquidity restriction

Locked units cannot generally be redeemed because cash is needed.

3

Regulatory risk

Eligibility, limits, and taxation can change.

4

Last-minute selection risk

Rushed year-end purchases often prioritise deduction over suitability.
